Dear Alice,
I am a 22-year old male grad student, now starting my second semester at SIPA. I have been doing very well academically, but my studies and my work-study job leave me absolutely no time for a social life! I have not been on a date since I got here; tho
ugh I meet a lot of interesting people, and am in the habit of collecting their phone numbers. However, I can never seem to find any time to spend with them. Sometimes this really depresses me; I have noticed that I have lately been smoking much more heavily than I used to.
Sincerely,
Always in a rush to get something done
Dear Always in a rush to get something done,
Slow down! Whatever doesn't get done today will still be there to do
tomorrow! Studies have shown that people who are harried and rushed
versus people who are calm and methodical both get the same amount of
work accomplished...
Set aside time each week (or ideally each day) for socializing. It is
not healthy or realistic to only be involved in your studies or work.
Call one person a week from your collection of phone numbers and go out
and have fun! This will give you some structured time for socializing,
and help you concentrate even more when you're studying (rather than
constantly THINKING about socializing).
- Alice
P.S. If you took all the time you spend smoking cigarettes each week and added it together, you'd probably have enough time for a date!
